Medieval town fortifications of Kamień Pomorski
Wolin Gate is one of the few remaining remnants of Kamień Pomorski's medieval defense system. It is located at the western end of the Old Town and, together with the now defunct Cathedral Gate, was the main entrance to the town.
The structure consists of a proper gate with a rectangular passage and a square tower adjacent to it from the side, which is much higher than the gate part. The lower part of the tower is in the shape of a prismatic truncated pyramid, while the upper part is cylindrical and topped with a conical roof.
Both the gate and the tower are built of brick in the Gothic style. The gate's facades are decorated with slender, pointed-arch blancs, and the interior of the tower now houses the Stone Museum's exhibition. Blanks crowning the walls and the emblems of Poland and Pomerania give the gate a representative appearance.
A walk along the traces of the old city walls, the remains of which can also be found at the Lagoon itself, will certainly take several hours. However, it is certainly worth the effort to learn about the defense history of this charming city.
